Butterfinger And T.O. Will Pay The Bill For Any Player Fined For Excessive Celebration During The Last 3 Games Of The NFL Season

Business Insider- Butterfinger is offering NFL players up to $50k to cover the fines they may incur for excessively celebrating during the final three games of the pro season. The stunt is part of Butterfinger’s Super Bowl advertising campaign.  The NFL told Business Insider that this is an “ambush maketing attempt.”

Brand manager Kristin Mandel told Business Insider that she was not worried about the NFL’s response and that the brand had not consulted NFL on the promotion. She said: “Well that (consulting the NFL) would not be very bold, would it?”  “A pretty hefty fine can be applied to players who are deemed to be ‘excessively celebrating,'” she explained. “We don’t think it’s foul play, we think it is celebration. We want to bring these celebrations back to the game.”

Butterfinger is working with former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens who is renowned for the flamboyant celebrations which landed him fines and lost his team yards during his own playing career.  Owens once brought a permanent marker pen out of his sock to sign the football he scored with during an NFL game. In another controversial celebration, Owens mocked the New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick for his involvement in Spygate by pretending to be secretly spying and filming the game. Owens was fined $7500 and his team, the Dallas Cowboys, were penalized 15 yards.

Excessive celebrations fall under the “Unsportsmanlike conduct” section of the NFL rulebook. It rules out:

  • Individual players involved in prolonged or excessive celebrations. Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground. A celebration shall be deemed excessive or prolonged if a player continues to celebrate after a warning from an official.
  • Two-or-more players engage in prolonged, excessive, premeditated, or choreographed celebrations.
  • Possession or use of foreign or extraneous object(s) that are not part of the uniform during the game on the field or the sideline, or using the ball as a prop.

I have to say, this is a tremendous move by both Butterfinger and T.O.  If you think about it, they are almost one in the same.  Highly regarded in their respective fields, but with fatal flaws that make people hate them.  Butterfinger is obviously a tasty candy bar, but you are basically acknowledging that you will be picking that shit out of your teeth for days the minute you bite into one.  And T.O. was a Hall of Fame talent while also being one of the biggest asshole in a league full of assholes for like 10 years.  So this is truly a match made in heaven.

So for them to go against Goodell and the NFL for one of the stupidest rules ever is brilliant.  I mean who watches sports for entertainment? No way, man. We just want to see a bunch of gladiators mindlessly go about their athletic business with no extra sass. Dopes. So while Butterfinger and T.O. still suck for the same reasons mentioned earlier, I would be willing to overlook them if we can get some crazy dances for the last few games.  I mean I can’t hate T.O. too much since he gave me some of my favorite memories as a Giants fan and he never played one down for Big Blue.  Like when he disrespected the Dallas star

And bawled like a little bitch after the Giants stomped out the Cowboys on their way to Super Bowl XLII

So maybe this move will help T.O.’s case for getting into Canton.  Just kidding, I imagine the writers that pick the Hall of Fame hate touchdown celebrations as much as the NFL.  But you have to respect T.O. for the Sharpie celebration, which really started the NFL’s brief Golden Age of celebrations.  Like when Steve Smith did the boat rower celly against Minnesota after the Vikings sex boat scandal and Joe Horn pulling out a fucking cell phone from under the goal post during a game.  Damn the NFL front office has ruined their sport the last decade or so.

Also, speaking of food, I have a few new 15 second reviews up, including Gronk Flakes and Cinnamon Bun Oreos
